I haven't had much time/energy lately to draw in my spare time - need to get back in to it!
and study more animals as well (could be a nice sketch-of-the-day challenge for when I have a bit more time)

I got a couple of markers today and tested them. The outcome isn't perfect at all, but it's fun & freeing to doodle without purpose

and of course I couldn't resist adding a bit of photoshop

Right. I've barely posted the past month - but be assured, I have very good reasons why;

Firstly (as you could see in the previous post), I've had some freelance work on top of animating on Pinocchio ((yes! I've switched from TieDown to animation-hooray!)) So that means less time for free drawing.

and secondly, I keep falling ill!!! It's been a full 4 weeks now that I've been feeling shitty (scuze my french) verrrrry frustrating. And seems like I'm not the only one. A lot of people I know are ill, exhausted or extremely stressed out.
I say; boycott bacteria, lack of sleep and stress, starting today! Who's with me???

Un Monstre à Paris/a Monster in Paris

Yesterday I went to the avant-Première of 'a Monster in Paris' - a film by Bibo Bergeron.

I worked on stereoscopy (3D) on that one - very technical job, but I'm glad I did it coz I learned a lot!
And I'm kinda proud, since it's the first appearance of my name in the credits of a feature :)

A lot of great talents worked on it, and it has become a wonderful movie.
Go and see it if you can! (and buy the dvd ;) )

These are some sketches to figure out a design for a wallpainting we're doing at my ex-school, RITS.

The yellow-orangy part is supposed to be gold and the blobby things are movie-characters (it's a filmschool after all)
We ended up taking the middle sketch and improving it. I will post the final design and pictures of the wall next week, when it's finished.

We're learning a lot, having fun and I think the wall's gonna look great.
The golden paint looks awesome! and graffiti markers are the bomb :) --- so are pizza and beer

Yesterday we had a Disney-music-day -- So the theme for the sketch of the day was 'Disneyprincess'. I tried to paint with all the colors of the wind, but I think I'm missing yellow and green and pink :)

A couple of weeks ago I went on a 2 week roadtrip with my friend Els, to the south of France & a bit of Spain.
I barely touched my sketchbook. So much happened in a short time, It's as if we went away for a whole month. Many adventures to be remembered..

The last scribble I made sitting on a terras in Vallon --- fabulous! ,
and the first two sitting on a beach in Zarautz --- on a very cloudy morning, chased away from our 'camping'-spot by police and hungover from a night of free shots... I never felt so chavy :)

I've been picking up drawing a little bit at the time the past couple of days.
This is my first -warm-up- drawing after that mean tendinitis

The current topic for the AIB jumble is 'anticipation'
I enjoyed the style of the previous drawing (topic 'pink') so much, I really wanted to make another one
So I thought of a girl waiting for her date to arrive checking the street from time to time
(inspired by the late '80 early '90, Michael Jackson's album 'dangerous' and Lisa P in 'Adventureland' :) )

Right! I've managed to give myself Tendinitis - apparently there's such a thing as 'too much drawing'....
I think the inclination of the cintiq might have something to do with it > bad drawing position

So that means I can't draw for a week (minimum) - no work, no sketch of the day, no illustrations... I hope I get better real soon!!!

2 posts in one day might seem overkill - but I got an lovely little surprise concerning the Aardman comic! ------ (plus the sketch-of-the-day is essentiel, but it doesn't mean nothing else is going on worth posting)

For those of you who wonder; the London Film and Comic Con (LFCC) was more film than comic, badly organised for the comic artists (some of them scattered around between marchandising and photo's of actors, including us) and had cash machines that ran out of money by sundaymorning.
Needless to say we didn't sell that much --- but luckely we had fun times between the staring and boredom as well. It's always good to see friends!
And I have been told that our comic was a big succes at other comic cons, so it's just a bit unfortunate...

I hope to be at a better comic con next time.

I was ill yesterday, but I'm back now so here it is

I don't know which version I like best - the one without the trees feels more epic, but the one with trees has a nicer composition (the girl feels more trapped and you have the 'frame in a frame' effect)

The idea for this drawing was too ambitious for 20 minutes! It toolk me 35 minutes in stead. Need to choose something quicker tomorrow.

These are some drawings I made for my sister, Sarah.

Top images are some of the brainstorm sketches along with a mood board I quickly put together for inspiration.

The first colored drawing has the moonstone as theme (Sarah's favorite stone)
The second one has a hawthorn on it which is Sarah's tree according to the celtic calendar. It also has birches for her little daughter, Noémie and an oak for her man, Thomas.

Lost and found 02

The green drawing was lost in 1995 and found last year. I must have been about 8/9 years old when I drew it.
I thought the design of the girl was quite interesting, especially the eyebrows and strawy, wild hair. So I drew a more modern version of her (that would be the drawing on the right), which I bumped in to during a big clean up a month ago.

She's still intriguing to me. I think she'll pop up in a story one day. Maybe in one of the horror-comics I plan to make when I'm 30-ish :)

Every now and then old sketches pop up.
Some of them I just forgot about, some got lost in the piles of paper, some I didn't like at the time and shoved aside - but kinda like them when I take a look at them now,...

So I decided that every now and then I'll post one of those scribbles - all of these posts will be called 'lost and found ..'

Here's a joyeux jeudi drawing I didn't like at the time. It's definitely not perfect!! But I feel it has some character/personality to it

work-zombies and evil coffee

As I might have mentioned before, I had a lot of work to keep me busy back in Luxembourg - animating on Grenadine and Mentalo, making intense illustrations, an animation test for Pinocchio and a pitch for a pitchcontest for shortfilms at la Fabrique d'Images. Needless to say the days at the studio tended to be quite long.

I wasn't the only one though, I had the pleasure of Catherine keeping me company. The meaning of 'Working late' started to escalate.
'till what time are you staying tonight?' -- 'ooh not too late. 12ish.' -- 'yeaaaah me too.'
By the end of those two months, we worked till 2 sometimes 3 in the morning to be able to make a deadline. And get back to the studio again at 9 - 9.30 to work on Grenadine.

After a while we where what I would call 'work-zombies'

It's when having finished my Pinocchio test and illustration deadline that I really ran out of energy. So to still be able to animate decently on Grenadine, I turned to the ultimate solution; coffee!
I hate(d) the taste!!! and have only drunk it to make huge deadlines at school in the past. So it went something like this:

I felt wonderful after that! Animating and loving it. so I had 3 more coffees to make sure it'd stay that way.

How satisfied I was with the way my day had gone! now I could finally go to sleep...

It took me more than 4 hours to stop my hands and feet from twitching. It must have been 4.30 when I really managed to fall asleep. I was so exhausted the next day!!! I only remember one other occasion where I felt that exhausted and that was after making a 3min animation movie in about 6 weeks (a week of Annecy included).

I felt like I could faint at any moment. I got trough my morning thanks to an english tea (much less aggressive! No, no coffee for me, thanks).
Luckily I was ahead on my shots.
I must have looked awfully bad, coz animation superviser Sean sent me home. 'go to sleep, woman!!' ----- and so I did

Bus drawings = history?

Haven't done any 'bus drawings' for the past couple of months - I've converted to the independent-car-people-club to go to work. It's all singing along to the radio and comfort. No smelly people, noisy kids or pushy grannies. No missing the ride or waiting for that one bus that's always late while freezing my toes off....
But I might start catching the bus from time to time again, coz I sure miss drawing - and awkward moments with the models, lol!

My dad turned 60 this week. I wanted to give him something special! And since I couldn't come up with anything fitting to buy, I turned to my sketchbook.
I thought of all the good memories we share and picked one of them to skribble down.

This is my dad and I going to the museum of natural history in Brussels. He had to take me a million times coz I was obsessed with dinosaurs. He gave me all these little scientific explanations - which where amazing! - And he took me to the avant premiere of 'the lost world' too - waaawwwyyyyy!

Hi everyone!

My apologies for the lack of posts these past two month. It's been a bit crazy!

I said bye bye to stereoscopy on 'un monstre a paris' at walking the dog & moved to Luxembourg about a month ago to work on the tv-show 'Grenadine & Mentalo' at la fabrique d'images.
It's been fun getting back to animation and learning toonboom!

Between finding a place to stay, broken cars and catching up with friends, all my spare time went to the bible illustrations I've been making..... they take aaages!
Starting the project thinking to myself 'I want to learn something new and step up my game', I let ambition take over. So now every drawing needs to be of the same complexity/in the same style as the first ones... what doesn't kill you -- teaches you what not to do next time :-)
On the bright side I've learned a lot! I've really come a long way, so I think I'll be kind off proud of myself when I finish them (perfect or not)

At the request of my friend Pieter, I'm gonna share bits of the work process with you.
Here's what these drawings have been trough (so far);

I didn't started off very well.
Excited 'bout testing out the new 'technique' and not being used to drawing whole settings (I usually just draw characters) - I kind off skipped the awekward fase of composition. That means I had to try and fix it farther down the process (what a mess!)
So the first drawings turned out a bit flat - and not very thought trough in composition.

After a while, I started making black and white sketches before getting on with painting and colouring.
I struggled a bit to go from black & white to color. and I still think the colored versions turned out less dynamic than the B&W's somehow. But it's definitely heading in the right direction

Remember this drawing? I thought you guys 'd like to see the improved version. So here's the before and after.

I could probably paint on forever, but I really need to say stop at one point - especially because deadline's up in two weeks time and other projects need taken care of as well - so little time so much to do!
So the perfectionist in me will just have to keep quiet now (boy is she loud!)

I hope I'll be able to post more frequently from now one - if I ever find time to draw freely! :) to all of you who have the same problem let me here you say 'aaaay';

bus sketches part 2

As promised, more sketching on the bus. I'm getting lazier though - got to keep it going!

There's something wrong with the trousers of the guy with the hat - I think I was sitting too close to him or something... and I guess the awkward sitting position and the shaking of the bus didn't help. But I still really like that drawing.
A lot of wobbly busses lately! They lead to bad drawings, frustration and projectile puking (or nearly anyway). Doom to all wobbly busses!!!!

I've been dying to make some landscapes and some random illustrations that came up in my head! As soon as I find some extra time I'll get to that and post more variation than just sketches.... IF I eve find some extra time :)

I don't believe I ever posted any of these.

These are some of the illustrations I did for my lovely, creative and talented friend, Debbie. She wrote a children book for her studies, and I helped her out by making the drawings.
This must have been - errrm - about one or two years ago! I still quite like them though, so I thought I'd share them with you.

I went oldskool on this one: watercolours and a little black marker.

I remember not being happy about the colours, so I made a black and white version in photoshop as well. I think I like that version better.
Watercolours is definitely on my list of 'techniques to learn' --- such a hard one too!

a mural and a birthcard

Bumped into these when I was cleaning up my pc.
They're the designs I did for the mural in my adorable little nieces bedroom. I tried 3 different colourschemes, we went for the green one. And I made a birthcard to match the room ^^

Sketching on busses and trains

Time to draw is very scarce for me these days. So I've been sketching on the bus to work and back the past week - too keep 'in shape'.
It's only a good hour a day max, but it seems to work already! I'm gonna keep that up for now, so you can expect a lot of sketch-posts to follow.

Yesterday, two persons where 'annoyed' and even insulted by me drawing them. Today half the bus observed my work with a smile. It's always funny and interesting to see how people react.

in need of tips and feedback

I've been working on some illustrations for bible stories. As usual, I'm not taking the easy root in pursuit of learning new skills.
This time I'm trying to master proper digital painting. This drawing of Jona and the whale is the only one I'm relatively satisfied with so far. I think I'll post some of the ones I'm really struggling with later to get your feedback and tips, if you'd be so kind. In the meanwhile I'd really appreciate your opinion on this one. Maybe there's some things that can still be improved or comments that can serve the next drawings?
Backgrounds seem to go quite well, it's humans I'm really struggling with. Maybe that's why this drawing's ok :)

tales of the Spiffing

As some of you may already know, a while ago I had the pleasure of joining a group of animation artists, who work(ed) at Aardman, to make a comic. Each of us had to come up with a short story about/set in Great Britain.

Some of my own concept sketches.

As with every project, I like to push my boundaries and learn new things. For this one, I went for the classic -and awesome!- art of inking with brush and ink.
After a lot of exercising and a few heartfelt screams in pillows the first couple of days, I started to get the hang of it and enjoy it immensely! I have learned so much, and it has influenced my other drawing methods a bit as well.

For some of you who are interested here's some of the materials I tried out:
The brush that worked best for me was a the da vinci, marten hair n°2 brush. I really liked the 'petit gris' grey squirrel hair brush as well, as it seems to absorb more ink. But it started losing shape quite fast - hairs sticking out all around. Pelikan ink was not thick enough to my taste. Winsor & newton and Talens where both a good. And for the thickness of the paper, 200grams is definitaly the limit. Thicker than that the ink spreads out - which is good for watercolors, but not for this kind of inking.
Any suggestions on other brushes are welcome! I'm going to get some new ones soon to try out.

Well, you gotta do something to pass the time, but maybe inking is not very handy on trains. Especially when it takes ages to dry and you need to grab your stuff do get off and all that :)
